In keeping with the Indian Ocean Triennial theme “curiosity and rituals of the everyday”, the collaboration between members of Bunbury Studio Potters and Bunbury Weavers seeks to focus attention on a particular aspect of the everyday; the ritual setting of the table.

The table is deliberately austere, drawing attention to the plates and placemats that are so often simply a background to the food being served.

Each plate setting is different, some exhibit carefully executed decoration, others rely on form, glazing or simplicity.  The skillfully woven placemats complete each set with a frame of soft tactile texture and colour.   All reflect the aesthetic of the particular weaver and potter involved in its making.

Bunbury Studio Potters and Bunbury Weavers are member groups of Stirling Street Arts Centre. Ten potters and four weavers have combined their individual skills and techniques to bring an interesting interpretation to the notion of a table setting.

Weaving is one of the oldest crafts known. Most of the weaving in the exhibition is done on looms that are permanently housed at Stirling Street Arts Centre, some weavers also have looms at home.

Pottery is another ancient craft and some aspects of making are unchanged from ancient times. The exhibition has examples of wheel thrown and hand build tableware.
