How Did I Get Here?, the first capsule exhibition of works from Art Gallery of WA’s (AGWA) State Art Collection opens on Friday 17 January, 6pm at the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery as part of the Freighting Ideas state-wide initiative.
Inspired by the 1980 Talking Heads song Once in a Lifetime, the first touring exhibition from Art Gallery of WA for twenty years, How Did I Get Here? brings together twelve photographic and video works interwoven with various complementary pieces from City of Bunbury art collection.
Part of a new WA regional touring program called Freighting Ideas by ART ON THE MOVE and the Art Gallery of WA, the project involves the local community in developing arts activities and participating in broader conversations around art, alongside touring capsules of works from AGWA. Funded by the State Government’s Regional Exhibition Touring Boost, How Did I Get Here? is the first of two capsule exhibition travelling the State under the new pilot program.
How Did I Get Here? invites audiences to explore how each work came to be – the setting, the line between artist intent and how the subject presents. Each artist takes a unique and personal perspective – sometimes photo reportage sometimes imaginative fiction – drawing from real life to speak about the challenges of coming of age, cultural beliefs, race and religion, and our social selves.
It features works by leading contemporary photographers in the State Art Collection: Tony Albert (QLD), Michael Cook (WA), Petrina Hicks (NSW), David Rosetzky (VIC), Graham Miller (WA), Toni Wilkinson (WA), and Anne Zahalka (NSW).
This is an ART ON THE MOVE and Art Gallery of WA touring program developed as part of Freighting Ideas project.
This project has been made possible through the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost managed by the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries, supported by Royalties for Regions and delivered in partnership by ART ON THE MOVE and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
