Shane Pickett born in 1957 in the wheat-belt town of Quairading, east of Perth held his first exhibition when he was 19 years old. The show consisted of 42 landscape paintings.
For over three decades, Shane Pickett defined himself as a painter of the landscape, often declaring that “there is truth in the landscape. It is from the landscape that all that all our Nyoongar culture and beliefs come”.
It was the landscape that provided inspiration for his works. Pickett stated “in the works I have made and the life I have lived I have been very much honest to nature. Nature is honest and I try to bring that out. My career has been a journey, expanding in scope; as I have grown in maturity, my work has become less like a photograph and has tried to explore the deeper meaning of the landscape.”
Rheumatoid arthritis that had restricted Pickett’s physical activity for most of his life had taken its toll making it increasingly difficult for him to paint. In 2009 he decided to change the direction of his art practice. Several recently completed successful public art projects had motivated him to explore continuing his artistic career with a sculptural practice
Kaanarn: there is truth in the landscape presents for the first time, the works intended by Pickett as his final painting exhibition. Pickett had planned finishing his career as a painter by holding an exhibition of small landscapes, reminiscent of the early works presented in his first exhibition. There were also small abstract interpretations of country a testament to illustrating the journey he had travelled as a painter.
The proposed exhibition was to be held in February 2010 in Melbourne. The works for the exhibition were mostly completed by Christmas 2009, with only a dozen or so pieces requiring the final touches in January 2010.
Sadly Shane Pickett passed away unexpectedly on 15 January 2010 before completing this task.
